Having collaborated as a piano duo for over 15 years, Eleanor Hodgkinson and Jakob Fichert have recently launched the Leeds Piano Duo. The name recognises both pianists’ connection with this great city of piano performance: Eleanor and Jakob co-head the keyboard department at Leeds Conservatoire and have performed and adjudicated extensively throughout Leeds. One of their many fond memories is performing in the presence of the late Dame Fanny Waterman, founder of The Leeds Piano Competition.
The repertoire of the Leeds Piano Duo ranges from all-time favourites such as Schubert’s Fantasy in F minor and Debussy’s Petit Suite to contemporary music including collaborations with living composers. The duo regularly presents themed programmes, such as ‘Piano Duets from the Americas’ or ‘Piano Duo Works by English Composers’ but also offers mixed programmes of all kinds. They equally enjoy the experience of playing on two pianos and the more intimate setting of one piano four hands. Occasionally they have worked together with larger ensembles such as with the Orchestra of the Swan in their Birmingham Town Hall series or the Royal College of Music’s ‘Singing a Song in a Foreign Land’ project.
Passionately believing that music is for everyone, education and outreach has always been at the heart of the duo’s mission. In numerous workshops in public schools and for music services the duo have coached students at every level and from many different backgrounds. Eleanor and Jakob have also led projects for student composers at Leeds Conservatoire and the Junior Royal Academy of Music.
Outside the duo, Eleanor and Jakob have ongoing concert careers, performing in prestigious venues and festivals as well as recording for Naxos and other high-profile labels as soloists and collaborative artists. Both pianists are also distinguished pedagogues in great demand for master classes the world over. In addition to their commitments at Leeds Conservatoire, Eleanor leads the keyboard section at Junior Royal Academy in London, and Jakob is co-programme leader of Piano Studies at University of York. Research constitutes a big part of the professional portfolio of the two pianists. Eleanor has undertaken award winning research on performance anxiety and wrote a chapter for ‘New Thoughts on Piano Performance’ published by LIPS. Jakob has recently completed a PhD on the Piano Works of Adolf Busch and edited two publications for Breitkopf & Härtel.
